The FXRH Collection is a compilation of all four issues of FXRH ("Special Visual Effects Created by Ray Harryhausen"), the legendary fanzine published from 1971–1974. Now reprinted in a Deluxe Hardcover 2nd Edition by the original publishers. In 1971, Ernest Farino and Sam Calvin teamed up to create and publish the first fanzine devoted entirely to stop motion master Ray Harryhausen. Named for Ray’s on-screen credit, Special Visual Effects Created by Ray Harryhausen (or FXRH) made its debut as a 26-page offset publication, side-stapled, with a print run of only 300 copies. Three more issues followed, each better than the last. This limited edition, deluxe hardcover book combines all four issues and includes new and rare artwork and photos, many never printed before. The original issues of FXRH include:• Extensive coverage of Ray's 16mm Fairy Tales, with frame blowups;• Technical analysis of the effects in Valley of Gwangi;• Detailed 2-part filmbook on Jason and the Argonauts;• The 1971 interview with Ray and producer Charles Schneer at the National Film Theater (UK);• Sam Calvin's famous parody "The Jiggling Rock";• Ray Harryhausen's "aerial brace" creations by Mark Wolf;• Frame-by-frame sequences;• An interview with Charles Schneer;• Coverage of the then-new The Golden Voyage of Sinbad;• An exclusive interview with Kerwin Mathews, conducted by Star Wars' Mark Hamill;• Ray Harryhausen's early 16mm films, with frame blowups;• Complete credits from Ray’s films;• Plus: Trivia, editorials, cartoons. All of the above reprint material—presented just as the original magazines were when they first came out—are interspersed with:• The making of the cover portrait of Ray Harryhausen by 2012 Rondo Award-winning artist Mark Maddox;• The trials and tribulations of producing FXRH—one of the first animation fanzines;• An account by artist Mike Presley on creating the iconic cover art for FXRH #3 and #4;• Accounts of Sam and Ernie each meeting Ray in his London home in 1971 (long before Ray attended conventions);• A side trip by Ernie while in Rome to meet Italian Western maestro Sergio Leone (and a brief encounter with Federico Fellini and Marcello Mastroianni);• A lengthy letter from Jim Danforth in reply to FXRH #4 (never printed originally because there was no issue #5);• New material covering Ray's activity since FXRH, including his much deserved Academy Award® and "Star" on the Hollywood Walk of Fame;• Post–FXRH: What Sam and Ernie went on to do in later years. This upgraded, revised edition features improved photographic images (retouching and resolution and superior color correction), improved layouts, and new photos. Expanded the page count from 316 to 351 pages.Comments from (verified) buyers of the first edition of The FXRH Collection:"I am thrilled, delighted and overwhelmed over this mammoth, professional, one-of-a-kind compendium.""The layout is a marvel, but most important is the personal quality Ernie and Sam have given to the text—such great camaraderie between these two friends!""I really feel as if I am living through Sam and Ernie's mutual love for Harryhausen's oeuvre, and how they created FXRH. And did they have a great time traveling to England and getting the royal treatment from Ray, or what...?!""I particularly enjoyed the personal letters from Ray—and even a letter from Ray's mother! Marvelous!"Before An Animated Life… Before Film Fantasy Scrapbook… Even before Starlog magazine… There was FXRH. Now back again—New and Improved! Read more
